Tournament Format & Key Rules

First Stand 2026 introduces several format innovations designed to reward adaptability and strategic depth. The decision to make every match Best-of-Five represents a significant departure from previous years, where group stages often featured Best-of-Ones. This ensures that adaptation and series-specific strategy take center stage from day one .

Fearless Draft returns after its successful debut, preventing teams from picking the same champion twice in a series. This forces deeper champion pools and creates more varied matchups as series progress .

First Stand also marks the international debut of the First Choice system, replacing traditional side selection priority. Teams that earn selection priority now choose one of two options: map side (blue or red) OR draft priority (first pick or second pick). The opposing team then receives the remaining option. This adds a layer of strategic mind games before champions are even locked in, rewarding preparation and adaptability over baked-in side advantages .

Patch 26.5 & MSI Stakes

First Stand 2026 will be played on Patch 26.5, which hits live servers on March 4 . This pro-play focused update deliberately targets dominant mid laners while empowering jungle diversity.

Azir’s health per level drops from 119 to 108, making him significantly squishier in later stages. Orianna’s early Q cooldown increases from 6 to 7 seconds, slightly reducing her lane dominance. On the buff side, Lee Sin’s Q base damage increases to 65-185, potentially reviving the Blind Monk as a competitive pick. Mel receives significant ultimate damage buffs to 125/200/275 base, possibly elevating her niche presence after struggling post-26.3 .

The winning region earns a direct bye into the MSI 2026 Play-In Stage, bypassing the initial elimination round. MSI 2026 heads to Daejeon, South Korea later this year, followed by Worlds 2026 returning to North America with finals in New York City .
